Light and Bright Home Transformation

When the Brown family first toured their current home, it ticked almost every box. It had enough room for their growing family, a beautiful property with a small lake, and lots of natural light, but the interior design didn’t fit their personal style. To transform the home into a light and bright space, the Spillman team collaborated with Scout and Nimble. Now, the Browns have a home that feels like them.

The family room was originally painted an outdated blue, and it had carpet and fixtures that were reminiscent of the early 2000s. To lighten up the room and make it feel more modern, we painted it Classic Gray from Johnston Paint & Decorating, replaced the carpet with stained wood floors, and installed a minimalist ceiling fan. To tie it all together, we completely remade the fireplace to match the walls, retiled it with the same stone used in the kitchen, and mirrored the kitchen’s floating shelves with a wooden mantle. Another pro touch was covering a drywall soffit with stained wood to mimic an exposed beam.

The honey-colored kitchen also got a modern makeover. We used white shaker cabinets and black granite countertop for the outers of the kitchen, but we opted for a contrasting white quartz countertop on the extended island.

At Spillman Homes, we believe interior design is all about the details, and this kitchen is no exception. The gold hardware, wooden open shelves, and stone backsplash give a trendy edge to this otherwise classic kitchen. The brass sconce lights and large pendant lights complete the room with pops of texture and warmth.

This three-season sunroom was a major selling point of the home, but the paneling darkened the otherwise bright space. We gave the room a quick coat of white paint, and the family used a mix of mid-century modern and round textured chairs to tie it in with the rest of the house. Now, the sunroom feels like an extension of the living area.

This dining room is another example of how small surface-level changes can make a huge impact. We restained the wood floors, gave the room a fresh coat of paint, and changed out the light for a more dramatic fixture. A mix of wishbone and patterned chairs add character to the design, and we removed the curtains to bring in even more natural light.

This room at the front of the house went through perhaps the biggest transformation of all. We turned the mauve living room into a green office space, complete with sleek wood floors and custom built-ins. With plenty of storage and smart furniture choices, the family can use this modern study for everything from puzzles to homework.

We washed the whole room with Desert Twilight from Johnston Paint & Decorating, and the family used a vintage, oriental rug for an extra pop of color. Navy pendant lights anchor the sturdy wood table, and gold sconce lights highlight the family’s show-stopping 48-star American flag.

We were happy to team with Scout and Nimble on the design of this home. This transformation shows that you don’t always need to completely reimagine the layout of your house to turn it into the home of your dreams.
